The island of Ugljan (52 km2 and 75 km of irregular coastline) lies just opposite to Zadar, divided only by several nautical miles of the Zadar Channel. It is covered by evergreen pine forests, macchia, fig trees, vineyards and olive groves.

It has been tied to the sea, sailing and fishing for years, while its 2,000 years of experience in olive growing has left hundreds of thousands of olive trees. Oils of exceptional quality and fine aromas are produced from these olives. The entire northeastern side of the island contains a series of natural coves in which fishing and tourist settlements are nestled, among which the best known are Kukljica, Kali, Preko and Ugljan.

The other side of the island is generally uninhabited, as the coastal terrain is marked by jagged cliffs. However, its corresponding inlets, islets and rich undersea life make it a true challenge for divers and sport fishermen. The areas around the covers of Velika and Mala Lamjana, as well as Sabuša in the extreme southwest, are particularly attractive.

The hilly yet gentle inland terrain is crisscrossed by numerous paths which are perfect for walks or biking trips.

Those who love Mediterranean landscapes will relish its unforgettable panoramas; one of the most impressive can be seen from the Venetian fortress of St. Michael (13th century). Artifacts from the Roman era, early medieval Croatian chapels, monasteries, island stone architecture and numerous villas testify to the early human habitation of this island.

Over 2,500 hours of sunshine annually, stone and sandy beaches, a clean and crystal-clear sea, various possibilities for accommodation, original cuisine and good ferry-line connections with Zadar and Biograd are only a few reasons to visit and stay on this island.

ON THE GALAŠNJAK, an islet in the Pašman Channel planetary known for its heart-shaped shape, has been inhabited by humans in the distant past, a little more than 7000 years ago, in the older phase of the younger Stone Age, the latest discovery by the research team of the Department of Archeology at the University of Zadar A few days ago, in an underwater area between the islets of Ričul and Galešnjak, at a depth of six meters, he discovered an ancient huge rectangular structure built of larger amorphous stone.

“The construction dates from a period when the sea level was about five meters lower than it is today. This demanding construction project, about 80 meters long, was carried out by a prehistoric community to bridge the shallow waters of that time and reach and settle in Galešnjak. It happened somewhere. between 6100 and 5400 BC, as evidenced by the findings of so-called impresso ceramics, “explains Dr. Sc. Mato Ilkić.

It is, he says, an older Neolithic when people did not yet know metal. However, they were engaged in livestock and farming, and part of their food was obtained from the sea. Only a few of their settlements in northern Dalmatia are known so far. Besides Crni vril and Smilčić, it is also one locality in the Nin area. They are now joined by Galešnjak, an islet along which the great blueness preserves the oldest underwater structure in the Croatian part of the Adriatic.

The heart of the world is placed under the Pašman skirts. Just in the middle of the canal of the same name, right by the side of the low pearl, three islets called Bisage, we find a mystical and enchanting island. The island is this, if you look from the sea, which is not much different from its relatives. But if you decide to follow the path of a curious seagull, you will notice that its outlines change at once.

You were not fooled. It’s the heart. A heart that has been jealously guarding its Pašman for thousands of years. There are only three heart-shaped islands in the whole world, but only Galešnjak never really changes its shape. Neither the winter tides nor the high tides, not even the Velebit storm, could find a way to harm this beauty.

The Galešnjak gives, not asks. He hugs you with his being and as if to say, Man, love me.

This monastery complex is of particular importance for the cultural and historical heritage of the island of Pašman because it is directly connected with the Croatian medieval state, that is, with the ruler Peter Kresimir IV. It is located in the southern part of the island, on Ćokovac hill, 2 km northwest of Tkon.
Church of St. Cosmas and Damian was first mentioned around 1070 when Croatian King Petar Kresimir IV. granted the right to the church and surrounding subdivisions to the monastery of St. John the Evangelist in Biograd.

The next Croatian ruler, Dmitar Zvonimir, also donated estates to Pasman on the Benedictines of Biograd. Several decades later, in their war against the Croatian kingdom, the Venetians destroyed the town of Biograd together with the Benedictine monastery. The Benedictines found a new refuge just at Pašman, and in 1125 they completed the construction of a new monastery in Ćokovac. That the island of Pašman was a safe haven for the locals is evidenced by the event of 1202, when church dignitaries and nobles of the city of Zadar took refuge in a monastery in Cokovac, fleeing the Venetians who had destroyed the city of Zadar.

The monastery at Ćokovac was rebuilt during its past but many of its medieval elements. The monastery church has completely preserved the Gothic appearance, and other parts of the former porch and fence are still there.
