The island of Ugljan (52 km2 and 75 km of irregular coastline) lies just opposite to Zadar, divided only by several nautical miles of the Zadar Channel. It is covered by evergreen pine forests, macchia, fig trees, vineyards and olive groves.

It has been tied to the sea, sailing and fishing for years, while its 2,000 years of experience in olive growing has left hundreds of thousands of olive trees. Oils of exceptional quality and fine aromas are produced from these olives. The entire northeastern side of the island contains a series of natural coves in which fishing and tourist settlements are nestled, among which the best known are Kukljica, Kali, Preko and Ugljan.

The other side of the island is generally uninhabited, as the coastal terrain is marked by jagged cliffs. However, its corresponding inlets, islets and rich undersea life make it a true challenge for divers and sport fishermen. The areas around the covers of Velika and Mala Lamjana, as well as Sabuša in the extreme southwest, are particularly attractive.

The hilly yet gentle inland terrain is crisscrossed by numerous paths which are perfect for walks or biking trips.

Those who love Mediterranean landscapes will relish its unforgettable panoramas; one of the most impressive can be seen from the Venetian fortress of St. Michael (13th century). Artifacts from the Roman era, early medieval Croatian chapels, monasteries, island stone architecture and numerous villas testify to the early human habitation of this island.

Over 2,500 hours of sunshine annually, stone and sandy beaches, a clean and crystal-clear sea, various possibilities for accommodation, original cuisine and good ferry-line connections with Zadar and Biograd are only a few reasons to visit and stay on this island.

ON THE GALAŠNJAK, an islet in the Pašman Channel planetary known for its heart-shaped shape, has been inhabited by humans in the distant past, a little more than 7000 years ago, in the older phase of the younger Stone Age, the latest discovery by the research team of the Department of Archeology at the University of Zadar A few days ago, in an underwater area between the islets of Ričul and Galešnjak, at a depth of six meters, he discovered an ancient huge rectangular structure built of larger amorphous stone.

“The construction dates from a period when the sea level was about five meters lower than it is today. This demanding construction project, about 80 meters long, was carried out by a prehistoric community to bridge the shallow waters of that time and reach and settle in Galešnjak. It happened somewhere. between 6100 and 5400 BC, as evidenced by the findings of so-called impresso ceramics, “explains Dr. Sc. Mato Ilkić.

It is, he says, an older Neolithic when people did not yet know metal. However, they were engaged in livestock and farming, and part of their food was obtained from the sea. Only a few of their settlements in northern Dalmatia are known so far. Besides Crni vril and Smilčić, it is also one locality in the Nin area. They are now joined by Galešnjak, an islet along which the great blueness preserves the oldest underwater structure in the Croatian part of the Adriatic.

Gastronomy – When a fishing tradition with onerous effort is lost in one place, the result cannot be missed, so a regular lunch is a delicious treat on a regular basis. The aromas and tastes of Pašman will inspire everyone only on the island, where the quiet rhythm of life and listening to nature emphasize the essential – a family meal that brings together generations, when the beauty of simplicity is reflected in food prepared with love. For centuries, the sea has nourished the region with fish and shellfish, and has supplemented the mainland with savory snacks such as rabbit or pheasant stew and sweetened old fig and mendulas with a good drop of local wine.

The hospitality of the people guarantees that everything is shared with the visitors, so whether dinner is prepared by the host or eaten on the terrace of the restaurant, the true experience of gastronomy in the Pašman region is indispensable.

An experiance

An experience that is complemented by a lifestyle where the best of its fruits is harvested in a small country, and peaks, nets and long lines steal the most delicious snacks from the sea. Sea bass skillfully cooked on grills and stewed with homemade olive oil, just steps from where it is eaten, is not just a piece of fish. Behind every meal is a story, whether that fragrant piece was caught by an old fisherman with his grandson, who first brought him into the fish, or that this morning, a neighbor handed over another stalk of chard, which was so nicely placed in a bowl on the table. The harmony of human coexistence with nature gives every visitor of Pašman a unique opportunity to taste and enjoy healthy food prepared with love.

So come and let Pasman win you over with gastronomic delights, you won’t be sorry.

The heart of the world is placed under the Pašman skirts. Just in the middle of the canal of the same name, right by the side of the low pearl, three islets called Bisage, we find a mystical and enchanting island. The island is this, if you look from the sea, which is not much different from its relatives. But if you decide to follow the path of a curious seagull, you will notice that its outlines change at once.

You were not fooled. It’s the heart. A heart that has been jealously guarding its Pašman for thousands of years. There are only three heart-shaped islands in the whole world, but only Galešnjak never really changes its shape. Neither the winter tides nor the high tides, not even the Velebit storm, could find a way to harm this beauty.

The Galešnjak gives, not asks. He hugs you with his being and as if to say, Man, love me.

Island because it allows one to cross it along and across, with cycle paths that, through their intersection with the entire body of the island, leave an adventure pattern on it. All you have to do is go bold and go, because every effort will be rewarded 100 times any way you go.

The winding path stretches along the old olive groves, climbs the hills, descends into secret coves, and at least one surprise lurks behind every corner. Nearby caves hide the caves and stone remains of ancient times, and scattered beads along the path make every appearance of a small church or stone farmhouse. Interwoven paths lead to the beautiful nature of the island, where every breath brings the aroma of wild sage and other fragrant vegetation of the Mediterranean.

Depart in the early morning, in the dreamy magic of a mysterious green island, greet the Kornati from beautiful vistas and descend along centuries-old dry walls to hidden beaches and touch the sea.

This monastery complex is of particular importance for the cultural and historical heritage of the island of Pašman because it is directly connected with the Croatian medieval state, that is, with the ruler Peter Kresimir IV. It is located in the southern part of the island, on Ćokovac hill, 2 km northwest of Tkon.
Church of St. Cosmas and Damian was first mentioned around 1070 when Croatian King Petar Kresimir IV. granted the right to the church and surrounding subdivisions to the monastery of St. John the Evangelist in Biograd.

The next Croatian ruler, Dmitar Zvonimir, also donated estates to Pasman on the Benedictines of Biograd. Several decades later, in their war against the Croatian kingdom, the Venetians destroyed the town of Biograd together with the Benedictine monastery. The Benedictines found a new refuge just at Pašman, and in 1125 they completed the construction of a new monastery in Ćokovac. That the island of Pašman was a safe haven for the locals is evidenced by the event of 1202, when church dignitaries and nobles of the city of Zadar took refuge in a monastery in Cokovac, fleeing the Venetians who had destroyed the city of Zadar.

The monastery at Ćokovac was rebuilt during its past but many of its medieval elements. The monastery church has completely preserved the Gothic appearance, and other parts of the former porch and fence are still there.

A long time ago, in the deep past, the island of Pašman was settled in the ring of islands, islets and rocks of the Zadar archipelago. He shared with them through the centuries all the privileges and hardships that carry the sea, wind and sun – parents who give each islander pure love and life inspiration in exchange for eternal loyalty and respect. At every historical juncture, the life of the people on the island of Pašman was “bread with seven crusts”, from ancient prehistoric times, through the ancient Liburnians, Romans and Croats until today.

The name of the island

The name of the island has changed throughout history. The earliest mention dates from the 10th and 11th centuries. The Croatian version of the name, which we still use today, was first mentioned in the 14th century, and since the 15th century the name Pašman has become permanent.

Despite the very late first documented mention, the island of Pašman bears testimonies of human presence since early prehistory, when Pašman was not even an island. Today’s island landscape began to form about 12,000 years ago in the Middle Stone Age.

Pašman enters the new era as part of the Roman Empire. Prior to Roman times, the island and its population were an integral part of the Liburnian cultural group. When the Romans conquered the Jadasins (the Liburnian community in the Zadar area) in the 1st century BC, the Pasman Jadasins came under their rule. The island then, along with the neighboring island of Ugljan, became an integral part of the ager that belonged to the Roman city of Iader (present-day Zadar).

In the Middle Ages

In the Middle Ages times were all but peaceful. Pašman, along with Dalmatia, lived through political changes. In a narrow time strait, Byzantine, Croat, Croat-Hungarian and Venetian rule changed.

The island finally sailed the more peaceful sea in the new century under the auspices of the Venetian Republic, whose galleys often gave the most powerful sailors. After the global turbulence in Europe during the Napoleonic wars, the island found new peace in the Habsburg Monarchy until World War I.

Although surrounded by the sea on all four sides, the inhabitants of the island were not spared by global turbulence during the 20th century. The war, the underdevelopment of the island and the attractiveness of economically developed areas brought the torrents of young people from the island “belly to bread” across the sea into cities and overseas countries. Neither the Kingdom of Yugoslavia before World War II nor the communist SFR Yugoslavia managed to stem the outflow of youth from the island.

The island still managed to overcome the difficult 20th century, which ended with the final realization of an independent and sovereign Republic of Croatia. As its proud member, Pašman has stepped into the new millennium with modernization efforts, through the transition from a predominantly agricultural island to an island of tourist and hospitality character, ready to embrace any individual who wants a holiday in the crystal clear sea and untouched nature.
